Sakl?kent: Antalya’s ‘Hidden City’ ski resort

Touching down on the runway at Antalya airport a few days before Christmas, I began to feel a little concerned for my fellow passengers.
Seeking a week or so of Mediterranean sun as a welcome respite from the cold, dark and dank days of a British winter, some of them were peering rather anxiously out of the aircraft windows — at a rain-soaked runway, ominously gray skies and wind-whipped palms. Take away the exotic palms and it could have been the airport in the notoriously rainy Manchester they’d left four-and-a-half hours earlier, not “300 days of sunshine a year” Antalya. The rain, which fell continuously the following day, whilst no doubt sending Antalya’s local farming community into raptures, would have done little to brighten the spirits of the winter-sun seekers I’d shared a flight with.
