Ethiopia an ancient and diverse land

Ethiopia has a long history dating back thousands of years. In the past it was called the Abyssinian Kingdom. With a population of 82 million, it is among the most densely populated countries in Africa.

Forty-one different ethnic groups live in this country. It has abundant natural resources. Most of its territory consists of high plateaus and mountainous areas. Ethiopia’s symbol is the lion. In the past, Abyssinian kings would always be accompanied by their lions. They would even take their lions with them on travels abroad. Sixty percent of the country’s population is Christian, followed by Muslims with 32 percent and the rest believing in native tribal religions. Only 16 percent of Ethiopia’s people live in cities.
